A szerelmesek és a szerelem ünnepének eredete egy pogány rítusra, a becsület istenének, Lupercusnak az ünnepére vezethető vissza. 496-ban Gelasius pápa összekapcsolta a pogány fesztivált a keresztény Szent Bálint ünnepével. Szent Bálint népszerű szent volt, az olaszországi Terni püspöke, aki sok szerelmesnek segített. A Katolikus Egyház Szent Bálintot mártírhalálának napján, február 14-én ünnepli.

This celebration of love and lovers originally dates back to pagan fertility rites in honour of the god Lupercus. In 496 the Catholic church decided to eliminate both this pagan festival and its god and replaced him with Valentine, a popular Christian martyr, a bishop of Terni, Italy, who had helped many lovers during his lifetime. The church made Valentine a saint and set his feast day as 14th February.

L'origine de la fête des amoureux remonte à l'époque romaine et au rite de la fertilité associé au dieu Lupercus. En 496, l'Église décida de remplacer ce rite païen par une fête chrétienne et choisit l'un de ses martyrs les plus populaires, Saint Valentin, évêque de Terni (Italie), pour célébrer l'amur et les amoureux.

Fest der Liebenden stammt von einen uralten Fruchbarkeitsbrauch zu Ehren des Gottes Lupercus ab. 496 hat die Kirche dann diesen heidnischen Brauch und Lupercus verboten. Ersetzt wurde er durch Valentin, einen sehr beliebten  Märtyrer, der Bischop in Terni (Italien) war. Er hatte liebenden Paaren oft geholfen, deshalb erhob man ihn zu Heiligen und legte seinen Tag auf den 14. Februar fest.

La festa degli innamorati ha origine da un antichissimo rito della fertilitá in onore del dio Lupercus. Nel 496 la Chiesa, decise di eliminare questo rito pagano e sostitui Lupercus con Valentino, un martire molto popolare, che era stato Vercoso di Terni, in Italia, e aveva aiutato molti innamorati. Fece diventare Valentino santo e stabili la sua festa il 14 febbraio.

La fiesta de los enamorados tiene su origen en un antiguo rito de la fertilidad en honor del dios Lupercus. En el año 496 la Iglesia decidió suprimir este rito pagano y sustituir a Lupercus por Valentín, un mártir muy popular que había sido obispo de Terni, en Italia. Este obipo habia socorrido a muchos enamorados. Valentín fue santificado y su fiesta se fijó para el 14 de febrero.
